The police in the Albertine region are hunting for one of their own for allegedly shooting a suspect dead.

The officer has been identified as Euginea Ssenono, a police constable attached to Bwijanga police post in Masindi district.  The incident happened on Wednesday at 11 p.m. in Kinebabwa village, Kitamba parish of Bwijanga sub-county.

Ssenono had gone to arrest Ronald Asiimwe 30, a resident of the same area who was battling an assault case filed against him at Bwijanga police post.

However, a scuffle occurred between the police officer and Asiimwe. This compelled the officer to open fire in the air and in the process, Asiimwe was reportedly hit by a stray bullet killing him instantly.

After the incident, Ssenono fled with the riffle, which he later dumped by the road side.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson says detectives from Masindi Central police station immediately rushed to the crime scene and picked up the body which was later conveyed to Masindi General Hospital for postmortem before it was handed over to the relatives for burial arrangements.

He says that the detectives also recovered the gun.  Hakiza added that the hunt for the officer is on.
