Police crack down on Desh Kananura, revoke firearms license, seize three guns

KAMPALA, UGANDA – In a bold move, Ugandan Police authorities have revoked businessman Desh Kananura’s firearms license and confiscated his weapons, effectively withdrawing his access to guns.

Kananura, a motor rally driver and owner of Panamera Bar in Naguru, Kampala, had been accused of misusing his firearms to intimidate and extort money from individuals with whom he had business dealings. Despite numerous complaints and reports filed at Kira Road Police Station, no action had been taken against him, allegedly due to his influence over the station’s leadership.

Sources reveal that Kananura had been using three guns to intimidate and coerce individuals, prompting concerned citizens to report the incidents to the police. However, the police failed to act, seemingly due to Kananura’s influence over the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The police’s decision to withdraw Kananura’s firearms license and confiscate his weapons marks a significant shift in their stance, suggesting that they will no longer tolerate his alleged misconduct. This move may be linked to Kananura’s recent fall out with influential individuals, who may have prompted the authorities to take action.

Kananura’s history of alleged misconduct, including a previous murder charge, had raised questions about his fitness to possess firearms. His acquittal in 2017 due to lack of incriminating evidence had been met with criticism, and the DPP’s planned appeal in the Court of Appeal may yet bring him to justice.
