A big section of senior Police Officers on Monday gathered at Sts. Phillip and Andrew’s Cathedral in Mukono Municipality to mourn one of their own, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Darlington Eiru.
Eiru is reported to have collapsed and died while on duty in his office, at Clock Tower Police Station where he served as the officer in charge.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango told Kyaggwe TV that Eiru was on Sunday pronounced dead after collapsing on duty while in his office.
Onyango said that though Eiru was rushed to Nsambya Police Health Centre for immediate medical attention after his collapse in office, he was shortly pronounced dead.
He described the deceased as a very disciplined and hardworking officer who has always been on duty.
Eiru’s requiem service was held at Sts. Phillip and Andrew’s Cathedral in Mukono Municipality. The service was led by the Cathedral’s Assistant vicar, Daniel Balabyekubo.
Katwe Division Police Commander, David Kamugira who has been his immediate supervisor told the mourners that he spoke to him (Eiru) at around 7:15am on Sunday about the deployment around his policing area over the Wednesday Walk to Parliament protest and that he sounded very well without any health related complaint.
“There was also an accident at around 9:00am but he also responded very well to it. Shortly at around 10:00am, I received a call from one of his personnel that their OC had collapsed and they were taking him to hospital. I told them to go to Nsambya, though I thought they had gone to Nsambya hospital, they instead went to Nsambya Police Clinic,” Kamugira narrated before the mourners during the requiem service.
He added: “Within a few minutes I reached there and found when he was on drip. We arranged to get an ambulance to take him to Nsambya Hospital. But following my observation, I asked one of the nurses who was attending to him, why his tongue was white and also his hands were turning into the same colour. She responded that it was so because he was lacking oxygen.”
He said that unfortunately, upon reaching Nsambya Hospital in the emergency unit, when the doctor examined Eiru, he just pronounced him dead.
“The many questions we have are the same you also have. Had the cause of death been physical, we would have fought it may be by the use of our guns, but it was internal, less we knew about it,” the DPC said, before breaking down emotionally.
Kamugira implored his fellow men and women in Police to love each other and avoid infights, saying after Eiru’s death, he realized that life is nothing, not even the pips they put on their shoulders.
Abubaker Musiho, who was Eiru’s supervisor when he was still the DPC of Mukono Police Division as he (Eiru) served as the OC Namanve Industrial Park Police post, referred to him as someone who was so disciplined and good at decision making while at work.
Musiho said that however much Eiru was so committed with his work, and dedicated most of his time for it, he also loved his family so much and always spared his little time for it.
Eiru has left behind a widow, a fellow Police officer, Sylvia Eiru and four children, two boys and two girls.
Sylvia described her husband as loving to her as a wife and his children. She also said that despite his busy schedule, Eiru spared time for them as his family.
“I take this honour to ask my fellow Police officers to always spare time for your families. Because work can end any time but your family will be there for you always,” she said.
She added that on Saturday after work, Eiru picked her from Nakawa and took her to their home in Mbalala, Nama sub-county, Mukono district.
She added that he left very early in the morning with good health.
According to the Soroti West Division Member of Parliament, Jonathan Ebwalu who is the deceased’s brother, he will be buried on Wednesday July 24, at their ancestral home in Oderai cell Oderai ward Soroti West Division.
