Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Tomasz Grysa as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, succeeding Archbishop Luigi Bianco, who was transferred in May 2025 to serve as Apostolic Nuncio to Slovenia.
The appointment was officially announced on Thursday afternoon by Rev. Fr. Georges Kwami Kouwonou, Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in Kampala, in a statement released to the media at exactly 1:00 p.m.
Archbishop Grysa, a seasoned diplomat of the Holy See, has until now served as Apostolic Nuncio to Madagascar, Seychelles, and the Mauritius. He also held the role of Apostolic Delegate to Comoros and Réunion.
Born on October 16, 1970, in Poznań, Poland, Archbishop Grysa was ordained a priest for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Poznań on May 25, 1995. He later earned a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University.
He joined the diplomatic service of the Holy See on July 11, 2001, and has served in a wide range of Vatican diplomatic missions, including in the Russia, India, Belgium, Mexico, Brazil, the Holy See’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City, and in Israel, as well as the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem and Palestine.
On September 27, 2022, Pope Francis appointed him Titular Archbishop of Rubicon and Apostolic Nuncio to Madagascar, as well as Apostolic Delegate to Comoros and Réunion. He was ordained bishop on November 1, 2022. Additional appointments followed in 2023, when he was named Apostolic Nuncio to Seychelles on February 9 and to Mauritius on March 21.
Fluent in Polish, Italian, French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian, Archbishop Grysa brings extensive diplomatic and pastoral experience to his new assignment in Uganda.
The Apostolic Nuncio is the Pope’s personal representative both to the government of Uganda and to the Catholic Church in the country. Holding the diplomatic rank of ambassador, the nuncio plays a dual role of strengthening relations between the Holy See and the Ugandan state while also maintaining close ties with the country’s bishops, clergy, and faithful.
Diplomatic relations between Uganda and the Holy See were formally established in 1966, shortly after Uganda gained independence. Before the opening of a resident mission in Kampala, Uganda fell under the Apostolic Delegation for Eastern Africa, based in Nairobi.
The first resident papal representative to Uganda was Archbishop Amelio Poggi, who served as Apostolic Pro-Nuncio from 1967 to 1969. He was followed by Archbishop Luigi Bellotti, Archbishop Henri Lemaître, Archbishop Karl-Josef Rauber, and Archbishop Luis Robles Díaz.
In more recent decades, Uganda has hosted several notable nuncios, including Cardinal Christophe Pierre, currently Apostolic Nuncio to the United States; Archbishop Paul Tschang In-Nam; Archbishop Michael August Blume; and most recently Archbishop Luigi Bianco, who served from 2019 until his transfer in 2025.
The appointment of Archbishop Tomasz Grysa marks a new chapter in the long-standing relationship between Uganda and the Holy See. With more than two decades of diplomatic service across multiple continents, he arrives in Kampala with a wealth of experience and a strong reputation for pastoral commitment and international engagement.
Uganda’s Catholic community, together with government officials and the diplomatic corps, is expected to warmly welcome the new Apostolic Nuncio as he begins his mission of representing the Holy Father and strengthening the bonds between the Vatican and the Church in Uganda.
