Popularize EC Roadmap, Political Party Leaders Urged

The Luweero District Election Administrator has urged the political party leaders to disseminate the Electoral Commission roadmap to their respective members.

Last year, the Electoral Commission released the roadmap leading to the 2026 General Elections, focusing on early preparations and adequate funding for all activities.

According to the roadmap, demarcation of the electoral areas will be done by July 2024, and a general update of the National Voters’ Register by January 2025. Nomination of candidates for the 2026 Presidential campaigns will occur between 2nd October and 3rd October 2025 among other activities.

Sam Rutemba Agaba, the Luweero District Election Administrator said that the Electoral Commission launched the roadmap in the presence of National Political party leaders, and were asked to disseminate it to their supporters for preparations.

However, Rutemba noted that several leaders especially in the upcountry district haven’t seen the roadmap neither know the upcoming events.

She warned that some activities may be covered without the knowledge of the leaders and complaints arise in the future.

Speaking at the Electoral Reforms stakeholders’ dialogue organized by Community Development and Child Welfare Initiatives (CODI) at Nayiga Hotel Luweero town, Rutemba challenged participants to tell the audience if they had even seen the road map in vain.

He asked the leaders to follow up the activities in the roadmap and prepare in advance since many will be rolled out soon.

David Kamugisha the National Resistance Movement (NRM) registrar for Luweero district admitted that there was little effort to disseminate both Electoral Commission and party roadmaps.

Kamugisha also observed in some cases, both the Electoral Commission and NRM party have adjusted their roadmaps making it difficult for citizens to follow them.

Samuel Bunjo the Luweero district National Unity Platform (NUP) publicity secretary faulted the Electoral Commission for not conducting voter education which could cover such activities.

Andrew Lubega a programme coordinator of Community Development and Child Welfare Initiatives said that as a result, they have resolved to conduct dialogues where Electoral Commission officials can disseminate the road map and push for electoral reforms.
