President Museveni praised the religious leaders of Uganda for their steadfast condemnation of corruption in their Easter message. He acknowledged their efforts in forming the inter-religious council in 2001, uniting faiths across the country to combat the scourge of corruption.
Museveni urged continued vigilance to eradicate these ungodly practices, emphasizing that corruption hampers Uganda’s progress.
Reflecting on Uganda’s history, Museveni highlighted the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) awareness of corruption, dating back to the 1960s.
He recalled efforts to combat corruption among chiefs, educators, and medical professionals. Museveni applauded the recent sermons by Christian preachers during Good Friday services, echoing the central tenets of loving God and one’s neighbor.
Addressing the role of governance structures, Museveni emphasized empowering citizens to hold elected leaders accountable for corruption. He underscored the importance of grassroots oversight, urging communities to utilize their local councils effectively.
Museveni called upon the Regional District Commissioners (RDCs) to actively monitor government officials’ conduct and pledged to take action against any misconduct reported to him.
Museveni linked land grabbing to corruption, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts from administrative, political, and religious bodies to address this issue. He encouraged religious leaders to engage in discussions on wealth creation, citing examples of bishops involved in agricultural initiatives.
Museveni also highlighted the detrimental impact of property fragmentation on agricultural productivity, stressing the NRM’s commitment to poverty alleviation and education initiatives.
