President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has today (Monday) met with a delegation of Italian investors at State House Entebbe.
In this meeting, the delegation, led by the Ambassador of Italy to Uganda, H.E. Mauro Massoni, expressed their intention to fund and execute the construction of a railway line from Tororo to Majanji, as well as a port at Majanji.
President Museveni welcomed the proposal, noting that the railway line would alleviate traffic from Northern Uganda and some neighboring countries. “That traffic doesn’t have to come to Kampala. It can go straight either to Kenya or to Tanzania,” the President remarked. He added that while the government is beginning the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway, which will link directly from the Kenyan border to Kampala, the connection from Tanzania will take longer to develop. In the interim, the lake route through Majanji Island to Tororo will be utilized.
Mr. Bloise Vincenzo, representing the Italian investors, also proposed the establishment of an academy to train Ugandans in the latest technology for railway line construction and maintenance.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Investment and Privatization, Hon. Evelyn Anite.
