President Lauds DPP for Taking Lead in Remembering Late Joan Kagezi

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has praised the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for its commitment to honoring the late State Prosecutor, Joan Kagezi.

Speaking at the 7th Joan Kagezi Memorial Lecture held at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, President Museveni emphasized the importance of remembering those who have served and sacrificed for the country. He highlighted the dangers of a culture of forgetting and commended the annual lectures as a means to foster gratitude and remembrance.

Reflecting on Joan Kagezi’s tragic death in 2015, President Museveni denounced the threats she received from terrorists prior to her murder. He condemned corruption’s insidious influence on law enforcement and judicial institutions, underscoring the importance of upholding integrity in these sectors.

Addressing concerns about compromised individuals within the prosecution team handling the 2010 bombing case, President Museveni stressed the need for thorough auditing to ensure justice prevails. He recounted the circumstances leading to Kagezi’s death, cautioning against impunity and vowing to bring perpetrators to justice.

President Museveni urged stakeholders to support families of those who perish in the line of duty, emphasizing the role of such assistance in fostering patriotism. He praised the resilience of Kagezi’s children and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to their well-being.

Acknowledging progress in the investigation, AIGP Tom Magambo assured the President of leads regarding those who orchestrated Kagezi’s murder. President Museveni cautioned against coercive interrogation methods, emphasizing the importance of due process in securing convictions.

On a positive note, President Museveni assured state prosecutors of ongoing efforts to address their welfare concerns, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving conditions for legal professionals.

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, lauded Kagezi’s dedication to justice and recognized her sacrifice in service to Uganda. Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo expressed gratitude for the memorial honoring Kagezi and emphasized the importance of upholding the presumption of innocence in legal proceedings.

Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms. Jane Frances Abodo, praised Kagezi’s exemplary service and noted her pivotal role in high-profile cases. She expressed gratitude for the government’s support in apprehending suspects linked to Kagezi’s murder and underscored the significance of the memorial lecture in honoring her legacy.
