Prominent businessman and politician Mukesh Shukla, popularly known as Shumuk and proprietor of the Shumuk Group of Companies, has been arrested as investigations continue into a series of long-running legal disputes involving contested property ownership claims.
Details surrounding the arrest remained limited by press time, with authorities yet to issue an official statement outlining the specific circumstances of the detention or any charges that may be preferred against the businessman.
Sources familiar with the matter indicated that the arrest could be linked to ongoing court proceedings and enforcement actions arising from the protracted property dispute between Shukla and the family of the late businessman Bonny Katatumba.
The dispute, which has spanned more than a decade, centers on ownership and occupation claims involving several high-value properties in Kampala, including Shumuk House and Hotel Diplomaté. The matter has generated multiple civil and criminal cases, making it one of Uganda’s most closely watched commercial property battles.
In recent years, the dispute has resulted in a series of court proceedings involving allegations of forgery, criminal trespass, uttering false documents, obtaining money by false pretence, and conspiracy to defraud. Shukla has consistently denied wrongdoing and previously maintained that the allegations against him are unfounded.
The latest development follows a High Court ruling that reportedly ordered Shukla and companies associated with him to pay more than UGX 14 billion in mesne profits arising from the occupation of portions of Shumuk House. The court also directed several companies linked to the businessman to vacate a number of condominium units.
Court records show that the legal battle between the Katatumba family and entities associated with Shukla has involved numerous lawsuits, appeals, and enforcement proceedings over the years, reflecting the complexity of the ownership dispute.
Despite the legal challenges, Shukla remains one of Uganda’s most recognizable business figures, with interests spanning manufacturing, real estate, hospitality, and other sectors. Through the Shumuk Group, he has built a significant business presence and maintained an active role in public affairs.
Observers say the latest arrest is likely to draw renewed attention to the long-running property saga and could mark a significant development in efforts to resolve the dispute.
Supporters of the businessman have previously argued that some of the cases stem from complex commercial disagreements and competing ownership claims, while critics have pointed to court decisions that have gone against him in several proceedings.
As investigations continue, legal experts note that any allegations remain subject to due process and determination by the courts.
Authorities are expected to provide further details regarding the arrest and any subsequent legal proceedings in the coming days.
