Speaker Anita Among extended warm wishes to Muslims in Uganda and worldwide for the holy month of Ramadan, expressing hopes for peace, blessings, and Allah’s mercy in a tweet posted on Twitter/X on Sunday evening. She emphasized the importance of fostering love, kindness, compassion, and empathy towards neighbors and fellow citizens during this sacred period.

However, the response to Among’s message was mixed, with some Twitter users applauding her sentiment while others raised concerns and criticisms about her leadership and alleged corruption.

Timothy Michael responded with a cryptic message suggesting the importance of utilizing time wisely and advocating for improved service delivery in Parliament. Florence expressed disappointment, accusing Among of being out of touch with the realities faced by Ugandans and labeling her as corrupt, which she found embarrassing to women and mothers globally.

Maji Maji highlighted the contrast between the wish for peace during Ramadan and the reality of individuals unjustly imprisoned in Uganda. He questioned the sincerity of the wish for peace in light of ongoing human rights violations. Che quoted a Quranic verse regarding punishment for theft, indirectly implying criticism of corruption in Uganda.

Denis Ssebagala echoed concerns about corruption, expressing hope that the spirit of corruption and theft would dissipate during Ramadan. Joseph Wabwire took a direct jab at Among, insinuating that she misuses taxpayer money and engages in corrupt activities, urging her to prioritize national transformation over personal gains.

The comments reflect a wider sentiment of frustration and disillusionment with political leadership in Uganda, with concerns ranging from corruption to service delivery and human rights. Speaker Among’s Ramadan message inadvertently sparked a debate on governance issues, highlighting the complexities and challenges faced by the country’s leadership.

As Uganda continues its journey towards progress and development, it remains crucial for leaders to address these concerns and work towards building a more transparent, accountable, and inclusive society for all citizens, irrespective of religious affiliation.
