Vipers SC and NEC FC played out a goalless draw in the first leg of the FUFA Super Eight under the floodlights at Kitende.
The match saw Vipers missing their head coach, Nikola Kavazovic, due to illness as communicated by the club, and the side proved second best throughout the game.
Despite NEC dominating possession for long stretches, they failed to create significant scoring opportunities, barely testing Vipers goalkeeper Jack Komakech.
The most notable moment of the game came when Isma Kawawulo’s free-kick found the net, but the goal was disallowed. New signing and substitute Paul Mucureezi was adjudged to be in an offside position when he attempted to head in the effort, rendering the goal invalid.
The visitors later felt aggrieved when Rashid Okocha was brought down in the box by Paul Mbowa, a challenge they believed warranted a penalty, but the referee waved play on.
Vipers, who recently defeated Kenya’s Police 2-0 in an international friendly, failed to capitalize on their home advantage. Their attack lacked the sharpness needed to break down NEC’s defense.
The two sides will meet again for the return leg on Tuesday at Lugogo, with the aggregate winner advancing to the semifinals of the tournament.
