the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has informed the court that investigations into the murder of former prosecutor Joan Namazzi Kagezi have been finalized. Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Thomas Jatiko, made this announcement during proceedings at the Chief Magistrates Court in Nakawa.

Addressing the court, Jatiko conveyed that the case against four individuals, charged with offenses related to terrorism and murder, has reached a significant milestone with the completion of investigations. He further informed the court that a summary of the case has been prepared, urging the court to issue a production warrant for the suspects to be committed for trial at the High Court Criminal Division.

The DPP emphasized that the prosecution has diligently gathered and compiled evidence necessary for the trial of the four suspects implicated in the case. Among the accused individuals are John Massajjage alias Mubiru Brian alias Badru alias Chongo, Nasur Abdallah Mugonole, John Kibuuka alias Musa, and Daniel Kisekka Kiwanuka. These suspects have been in custody since their arrest following an intelligence-led operation.

Currently, the four suspects are held separately at different prisons, including Jinja Main Prison, Kitalya Mini Max Prison, Luzira Murchison Bay Prison, and Kigo Prison. Chief Magistrate Erias Kakooza responded to the prosecution’s submission by issuing a production warrant, compelling the prison authorities to present the suspects in court on March 6, 2024.

The charges against the accused individuals stem from their alleged involvement in the attack and murder of Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Joan Kagezi, on March 30, 2015. The state accuses them of committing the crime with the intent to influence the government or intimidate the public for social or economic aims. According to the charge sheet signed by DPP Jane Frances Abodo, the suspects are alleged to have unlawfully caused the death of Kagezi, demonstrating malice aforethought.
