Outcry Grows Over Disappearance of Ex-Diplomat and Government Critic Humphrey Pole Pole » The Hoima Post –

Human rights groups and family members are demanding answers after the former ambassador to Cuba vanished following a violent break-in at his Dar es Salaam home.

Fears are mounting over the fate of Humphrey Pole Pole, a former Tanzanian ambassador to Cuba and outspoken critic of the government, who has gone missing under mysterious and violent circumstances.

According to Amnesty International, Pole Pole may have been forcibly disappeared and possibly assaulted. The organization has called on Tanzanian authorities to urgently disclose his whereabouts and ensure his safety.

“Amnesty International is deeply alarmed that Humphrey Polepole might have been forcibly disappeared and possibly assaulted. The Tanzanian government must put every effort into locating him and bringing him back to safety. They must hold his abductors accountable,”
Tigere Chagutah, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East and Southern Africa.

A Violent Break-In

Family members report that they were alerted to a break-in at Pole Pole’s residence in Dar es Salaam on the morning of 6 October 2025. Upon arrival, they discovered the door broken, electrical wires cut, and significant traces of blood inside the home — signs pointing to a violent struggle.

Videos and images shared by relatives appear to corroborate the scene, raising fears that Pole Pole may have been abducted by unidentified individuals. His current whereabouts remain unknown.

Calls for Transparency and Justice

Amnesty International has urged the Tanzanian government to immediately disclose the former diplomat’s fate and to conduct an independent and transparent investigation into his disappearance.

“Tanzanian authorities must ensure that those responsible for his abduction and possible assault are brought to justice,” the statement added.

Local activists have also demanded accountability, warning that the incident could mark a dangerous escalation in the silencing of political dissent.

A Known Government Critic

Before his disappearance, Humphrey Pole Pole had become increasingly vocal in criticizing government policies, particularly on governance and human rights. Once a high-ranking insider, his transition to outspoken critic reportedly drew the ire of political actors within the ruling establishment.

Pole Pole previously served as Tanzania’s ambassador to Cuba, as well as a regional commissioner and CCM party ideologue, before breaking ranks with the government in recent years.

Mounting Pressure on Authorities

As of Tuesday evening, Tanzanian authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the disappearance, further fueling public concern.

Amnesty International and other civil society organizations continue to pressure the government to act swiftly, citing fears that Pole Pole could be at grave risk.

Human rights defenders across East Africa have echoed calls for transparency, describing the case as a test of Tanzania’s commitment to justice and rule of law.
