The United Republic of Tanzania is gearing up to host the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting, set to commence in Zanzibar on March 4.
Gathering every two years, this meeting serves as a cornerstone for collaboration among the 56 Commonwealth nations, unified by a shared legal heritage.
This year’s theme, “Technology and Innovation: How Digitalization Facilitates People-Centered Access to Justice,” underscores the exploration of ethical tech implementation to enhance legal services accessibility while addressing challenges like cybercrime.
Honorable Ambassador Dr. Pindi H. Chana, Tanzania’s Minister of Constitutional and Legal Affairs and Chair of the 2024 Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting, unveiled the meeting’s details during a press conference in Zanzibar on February 26.
Speaking to reporters, she emphasized the anticipated benefits, including strengthening law enforcement, promoting tourism, attracting investors, and fostering opportunities for local entrepreneurs to thrive.
Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, lauded Tanzania’s efforts in orchestrating the meeting and stressed the urgency of closing the global justice gap, affecting two-thirds of the world’s population. She underscored the pivotal role of equal access to justice in fostering development, inclusive growth, and conflict mitigation.
Highlighting the importance of the upcoming meeting, Secretary-General Scotland articulated the Commonwealth’s commitment to ensuring justice for all members, urging innovative solutions to contemporary challenges.
The four-day agenda will delve into various legal topics, including digital assets, efficient legal systems, accessibility for people with disabilities, and climate legislation advancements.
The outcomes will inform the agenda of the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa later this year.
The meeting venue is the Mora Hotel in Zanzibar, scheduled from March 4 to 8, 2024.
