A primary school teacher in Terego district has been arrested for allegedly defiling his 16-year-old daughter for three years.
The suspect has been identified as Polino Caleku, a teacher of Ajiraku Primary in Bileafe sub-county, Terego District. He was arrested on Tuesday at Wandi Primary School in Katrini sub-county. Caleku’s arrest followed complaints from some concerned relatives.
One of the victim’s relatives who spoke to Uganda Radio Network on condition of anonymity says that Caleku had been sleeping with his daughter under the guise of offering help to her during the night since she was suffering from a suspected demon attack. He further noted that the suspect started the behaviour in 2022.
Josephine Angucia, the Police Spokesperson for the West Nile region says that they have already dispatched detectives to gather more evidence.
Moses Mandebo, the LCIII Chairperson of Katrini sub-county challenged girls to not suffer silently but to report such acts to relevant authorities.
Peace Abaru, the team leader of Peace for Women-West Nile, a local community-based organisation operating in Terego district and Arua City pledged to ensure that justice prevails. Abaru also adds that they intend to offer psychosocial support to the victim.
At least 153 children in the West Nile region were defiled in 2023 according to the latest police Annual Crime report.
