KAMPALA — Three senior officials of Iganga General Hospital have been remanded to Luzira Prison after appearing before the Anti-Corruption Court on allegations of causing financial loss and misappropriating more than Shs1.8 billion in government funds.
The accused are Ramathan Gaboli, the Senior Hospital Administrator, Dr Dauda K. Mugoya, the Medical Superintendent, and Michael Isabirye, the Senior Assistant Accountant.
The trio appeared before Chief Magistrate Christopher Opiti at the Anti-Corruption Court in Wandegeya, where they were charged with 23 counts, including causing financial loss, theft, abuse of office, conspiracy to commit a felony, forgery and money laundering.
Prosecutors allege that the offences were committed between 2022 and 2024 while the suspects were serving as public officers at Iganga General Hospital.
Chief Magistrate Opiti informed the accused that they would not be required to take plea on the money laundering charges because those offences fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
He remanded the three officials to Luzira Prison until August 4, 2026, when the case will return for mention.
The prosecution, led by Mary Asiko, told court that investigations are still ongoing and requested more time to complete inquiries. The court granted the request.
According to the prosecution, the accused allegedly diverted more than Shs1.8 billion intended for the hospital’s operations.
They are also accused of fraudulently claiming funds for the training of community health workers, child immunisation programmes and other health activities that prosecutors say were either never conducted or falsely accounted for.
Commenting on the investigations, the Head of the State House Health Monitoring Unit, Dr Warren Naamara, said investigators had uncovered serious irregularities in the management of public funds at the hospital.
“Our investigations uncovered serious irregularities in the management and utilisation of public funds at Iganga General Hospital. We remain committed to ensuring that all public resources are used for their intended purpose and that those responsible for abuse of office are held accountable,” Naamara said.
He said corruption in the health sector directly affects healthcare delivery and undermines public confidence in government services.
“The fight against corruption in the health sector is critical because misuse of public funds directly affects service delivery and the lives of ordinary Ugandans. We will continue working with other government agencies to strengthen accountability,” he added.
The case stems from investigations by the State House Health Monitoring Unit, whose findings triggered further inquiries by other government investigative agencies, leading to the prosecution of the three officials.
