Police in Madi Okollo district are hunting for two suspects who escaped while being transported to Okollo central police station from Rhino Camp police station on Thursday Afternoon.
The suspects who have only been identified as Amid and Afeku were arrested on allegations of assaulting Stanley Butele, a resident of Katanga cell in Rhino camp town council during a night disco on Eid al-Fitr on Wednesday last week.
However, Butele succumbed to injuries on Tuesday at Arua Regional Referral hospital after he was referred from Rhino Camp Health Center IV where he was first admitted.
According to preliminary findings, the suspects who were being transported using the same motorcycle and being escorted by a yet to be identified police officer on a different motorcycle jumped off the motorcycle upon reaching Osiliva (a bad spot area) along the Rhino camp-Ogoko-Inde road in Degia Village, Olali parish, Ogoko sub county and ran inside Ajai Wildlife Reserve.
Jude Wannonda, the officer in charge of rhino camp police station says none of the escapees have been re-arrested but the police officer who was transporting the suspects to Okollo Central Police station has been arrested to aid with investigations. According to Wannonda, the suspects escaped while in handcuffs.
Shiraji Ondonga , the councilor representing Rhino Camp Town council wonders how the police could transport two suspects using a single motorcycle over a distance which is more than 50Km. Ondonga, calls for calm among the relatives of the deceased as police hunt for the escapees.
On Thursday evening, relatives of the deceased stormed Rhino Camp Police station upon receiving information about the escape of the suspects. It took the intervention of Jude Wannonda, the officer in charge of rhino camp police station together with the local leaders who calmed the situation.
This is the second time suspects are escaping at the same spot while being transported from Rhino Camp police station to Okollo central police station. Last year, two suspects escaped while being transported using a motorcycle and took off into the bushes of Ajai Wildlife Reserve.
