Summary:

  • Uganda and Kenya deepen ties in foreign affairs, security, economics, and socio-culture at the Joint Ministerial Commission session in Kampala. They pledge to enhance cooperation in various sectors, address trade barriers, and establish a monitoring mechanism for swift decision implementation. Kenya will host the next session in 2026.

Uganda and Kenya are strengthening their bonds in foreign affairs, security, economics, and socio-cultural realms, as affirmed during the second session of the Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) held in Kampala.

Led by Hon. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi E.G.H., Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, the delegation from the Republic of Kenya engaged in fruitful discussions alongside their counterparts from Uganda, led by Hon. Gen Jeje Odongo Abubakhar, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The delay of this session, originally slated for 2021, was attributed to the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the ministers emphasized the enduring historical ties between the two nations, which laid the groundwork for their current collaboration.

With a focus on reviewing past agreements, addressing outstanding issues, and identifying new areas of cooperation, the discussions spanned three key sectors: Foreign Affairs and Security, Economics, and Socio-Cultural domains. Both parties reiterated their commitment to deepening these ties, acknowledging the significance of political, economic, and socio-cultural collaboration.

Hon. Dr. Musalia Mudavadi commended Uganda’s successful hosting of the NAM Summit and G77 summits, highlighting the country’s leadership in these international forums.

Recognizing the potential for socio-economic advancement, Uganda and Kenya pledged to enhance cooperation in infrastructure, energy, and agriculture, aiming to foster economic growth and create opportunities for their citizens. Additionally, they resolved to address trade barriers to facilitate mutual development and prosperity, tasking technical officials with regular consultations.

To ensure the swift implementation of decisions, the two countries agreed on establishing a robust Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanism. They also welcomed the prospect of a joint technical committee meeting to tackle any lingering trade and investment issues.

Looking ahead, Kenya will host the Third Session of the JMC in 2026, underscoring the enduring friendship and collaboration between Uganda and Kenya.
