A rare gem of a political commentator is one of the descriptions that Ugandans across the divide have given deceased former presidential press secretary, Tamale Mirundi.
Mirundi passed away on Tuesday night at Kisubi Hospital in Kampala, where he had been receiving treatment for an illness for a month.
Commenting about his death, the Minister for Luweero Triangle, Alice Kaboyo said Mirundi’s loss is a great loss to the country.
“His passing is a significant loss, and his contributions to the field of media and public service will be remembered and honored.”
Kalungu West MP, Joseph Ssewungu described Mirundi as being “Uncensored and bold enough to speak his mind.”
“His passing away leaves an indelible mark that cannot be erased and he will forever be remembered.”
Minister for Youths, Balaam Barugahara said Mirundi left an indelible mark with his unwavering boldness and unforgettable presence.
“Mzee Tamale’s legacy will live on in our hearts and his contributions to our shows will forever be cherished.”
Singer Bebe Cool said, described the death as a big loss for the country.
“His unique commentary and style of articulation of political, social issues was unmatched, and will be irreplaceable. He’ll be deeply and dearly missed. Sending my utmost sympathies to his family, NRM, PLU and all Ugandans.”
Mirundi was in 2015 sacked as President Museveni’s press secretary and replaced him with Linda Nabusayi.
He was however elevated to become the senior presidential press secretary, before he was replaced by Don Wanyama.
Mirundi however said it was unfair that Wanyama who had replaced him was being paid more than him.
He boasted about being able to make life out of nothing to President Museveni’s mouthpiece.
According to Mirundi, his journalism journey started in his S.3 at Rubaga SS when the Literature teacher asked the class to write an imaginary story.
In the story, Mirundi imagine himself as a love letter being written by a lover and sent via post office.
He said in the story, the love letter was collected by the teacher, put it in her bra went home and stripped herself naked before reading it ad he peeped between her legs.
Mirundi said the following day the school was thrown into pandemonium when the teacher read it to them.
He was born to Molly Namatovu and Yowana Mirundi and held a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication and a Master’s degree in Communication
He was a journalist, author, and political analyst and throughout his career, Mirundi contributed to numerous outlets, including Radio 4, NBS TV, Top Radio, Beat FM, ABS TV, Impact FM, STV Uganda, Pearl FM, and Metro FM.
