Mugerwa on Denis Iguma, Police FC’s ultimate goal, expectations
Police Football Club head coach Simon Peter Mugerwa believes the squad at his disposal will achieve the ultimate goal upon return to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
Speaking to club media, Mugerwa acknowledged that after thorough assessment of the team in the aftermath of last season’s FUFA Big League, the move was to recruit experienced players which has been realized in the transfer window.
“We had to asess the squad which we had in the Big League to decide on which players had to stay and decide on who to go, and we wanted to strengthen the squad which we have done with experience and players coming from the Regional League.
“So we want to bring all those ingredients together to work in a competitive season where we want to maintain our status in this 2024/25 Uganda Premier League season.”
The Cops have had a busy transfer, signing ten new players with experienced defenders Denis Iguma, Farouk Katongole and goalkeeper Mathias Muwanga leading the cast.
Other new signings include Nigerian defender Adewale Bojo, Kizito Ryan Figo (UWA), Kevin Obua (Proline), Reagan Matege (Proline), Jjemba Abdu Shakur, Ibrahim Ssengooba and Gerard Ogweti (BUL FC).
Goalkeeper Sammon Oloka was re-elevated to the senior team after a season in the feeder side of the club, Police Young FC that features in the Regional league.
Optimistic the gaffer is in the young blood which he tipped to deliver if handled well. “We had to bring in new blood, in all departments. The fresh blood has great potential, and when handled well, they’ll bring something new to the team.”
Mugerwa says the senior players will make these young players grow up that confidence in the league.
“The experience of Denis Iguma is very high, so we want him to bring his leadership quality to the dressing room. Katongole has played for Bright Stars, URA and KCCA so his experience is very important to us.”
On the expectations, Mugerwa believes the competition will be high but determined to put up a great fight.
“We expect the competition to be very high, the teams are very determined. You could see in the Super 8 that it will be competitive, but we are ready to look at ourselves and develope a team which will come and challenge the teams that are going to be there in the league.”
On the target, Mugerwa couldn’t mince his words. “The target is staying in the league, have a good performance and being in the top ten.”
Police started its campaign with a barren draw against BUL FC at Kavumba recreation ground. They return to action on Friday 20th September against Mbarara City at Kakyeka stadium in Mbarara.
