Kituuma Rusoke, the Uganda Police spokesperson, has urged media outlets across the country to adhere to ethical journalism standards when reporting on matters related to the police.
Kituuma expressed concern over a recent trend of inaccurate and misleading reports from certain media organizations, which have misrepresented the Police Force’s activities.
“Such reports not only mislead the public but also damage the reputation of institutions. For example, the false claims about UGX 300 billion being allocated to the CID for renovations are implausible, as such a large sum would represent a significant portion of the police budget,” he emphasized.
During the weekly press briefing on Monday, Kituuma called on journalists to demonstrate professionalism by reaching out to the Police Force’s official communication channels for clarification and allowing the police to present their side of the story.
On August 9, the New Vision newspaper reported inaccurately on the theft of a police van, mistakenly identifying it as the Inspector General of Police’s official vehicle. The police later clarified that this information was incorrect.
Additionally, the police criticized the online media outlet Spyreports for publishing a sensationalized story claiming that the President had allocated nearly UGX 300 billion for the renovation of the CID headquarters in Kibuli, without verifying the information with the appropriate authorities.
