Uganda is set to become the focal point as it hosts the 11th African Society for Blood Transfusion (AfSBT) International Congress. The four-day conference, scheduled from Monday, March 4th, to Thursday, March 7th, will take place at the Speke Convention Center in Munyonyo, Kampala, situated on the shores of Lake Victoria.
This congress serves as a pivotal platform for collaboration, innovation, and advancement in transfusion medicine, holding significant importance for Uganda’s healthcare sector. Sources at the Ministry of Health highlight Uganda’s commitment to enhancing blood transfusion services and ensuring access to safe and effective blood and blood components.
The event brings together key stakeholders, including government officials, healthcare professionals, researchers, and industry experts, to engage in discussions, share insights, and explore solutions to pressing challenges in the field of transfusion medicine. The agenda encompasses a diverse range of topics, including blood supply and demand, patient management, and advancements in transfusion technology.
Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the Minister for Health, has expressed her enthusiasm for Uganda’s role as the host country, underscoring the congress’s significance in advancing transfusion medicine in Africa and beyond. She emphasized Uganda’s commitment to enhancing blood transfusion services and ensuring equitable access to safe blood for all.

The congress coincides with a period of increased demand for safe blood in Uganda. Ministry of Health officials have intensified efforts to strengthen blood collection, testing, and distribution infrastructure, resulting in notable achievements such as increased blood collection capacity and expanded transfusion facilities across the country.
In preparation for the congress, a delegation from the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) visited the National Blood Bank at Mulago.
