UJA Condemns Assault on NBS TV Cameraperson by KCCA Enforcement Officers

Kampala– The Uganda Journalists Association (UJA) has condemned what it describes as a violent attack on Siraje Kiberu, a cameraperson attached to NBS Television, allegedly carried out by enforcement officers from the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) in downtown Kampala.

According to the statement issued by UJA on Wednesday, the incident occurred on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at around 6:00 p.m. along the road leading to Kikuubo.

UJA said Kiberu was reportedly assaulted by three uniformed KCCA enforcement officers identified as Kabiito, Ibra, and another officer who was in plain clothes and whose identity remains unknown.

“The officers rounded him, beat him up and left him with bodily injuries when he was executing his journalistic work,” the association said in a statement.

The journalists’ body explained that Kiberu’s only “offence” was filming the officers as they allegedly shielded some reinstated street vendors operating along the road to Kikuubo, despite the vendors having been evicted from city streets last month.

UJA described the act as disturbing and warned that such conduct undermines press freedom and accountability.

“Such practices speak to impunity and criminality that should never be condoned,” the association noted.

The journalists’ umbrella body is now demanding justice for Kiberu and immediate disciplinary action against the implicated officers.

UJA further called on authorities to ensure the safety of journalists while executing their duties, emphasizing that attacks on media practitioners threaten transparency and the public’s right to information.
