ULS Appoints Advocates Ssali Babu and Lule Alexander to Key Leadership Roles Following Council Shake-Up

The Uganda Law Society (ULS), under the stewardship of the Radical New Bar, has announced the immediate appointment of Advocate Ssali Babu as Acting Secretary and Advocate Lule Alexander as Acting Council Member representing the Central Region. The appointments, made by the ULS Council, are in accordance with Regulations 15(1)(b) and 15(1)(c) of the Uganda Law Society (Election) Regulations, SI No. 10 of 2016, and will remain in effect until the Society’s next Annual General Meeting.

In a statement signed by Asiimwe Anthony, Vice President, ULS The new appointments follow a resolution passed at a recent ULS General Meeting held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, which led to the censure and removal of former post holders Phillip Munaabi (Secretary) and Geofrey Turyamusiima (Central Region Representative) from the Council with immediate effect.

Advocate Ssali Babu, a conveyancing and litigation specialist and partner at Nsubuga K & Co. Advocates, brings decades of experience to the role of Acting Secretary. Known for his leadership as Secretary General of the Central Motor Club and his community empowerment initiatives in Mukono, Adv Babu has earned respect for his advocacy against land grabbing and his efforts to support agricultural resilience in the face of climate change. He is widely regarded within the Radical New Bar as a principled leader with unwavering integrity.

Advocate Lule Alexander, the newly appointed Acting Council Member (Central Region), is the founder and managing partner of Xander Advocates in Masaka City. A distinguished human rights defender, Adv Lule has been at the forefront of legal activism in Greater Masaka. His leadership of the 16 June 2025 sit-down strike over judicial understaffing drew national attention, prompting high-level engagement between the Judiciary and the Radical New Bar Governing Council.

The strike led to a series of impactful outcomes: the appointment of an additional resident judge at the Masaka High Court Circuit, timely resumption of civil hearings, two plea bargaining sessions, one presided over by the Acting Principal Judge at Masaka Main Prison, and the execution of three criminal sessions across Sembabule, Kyotera, and Kalangala. Additionally, the Judiciary committed to operationalize the Rakai High Court in the upcoming financial year to ease case backlogs in the region.

The ULS Council has expressed full confidence in Advocates Babu and Lule, citing their dedication to justice and the rule of law. “We are proud to welcome these principled and transformative leaders to the Council. Their proven track records assure us they will advance the Society’s mission with diligence and purpose,” the Council stated.

Both appointments signal a continued shift in the ULS’s leadership dynamics under the Radical New Bar, with a strong emphasis on reform, accountability, and grassroots engagement.
