UPDF, South Korea Deepen Defence Ties with Focus on Medical Cooperation

KAMPALA — The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has held talks with South Korea’s Defence Attaché to Uganda, Colonel Kim Seha, with both sides committing to deepen military cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting, held on Monday at the Special Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters, focused on strengthening defence relations between Uganda and the Republic of Korea, including cooperation in healthcare and medical training.

Gen Muhoozi commended the Korean Armed Forces for what he described as their professionalism and technological advancement, saying the partnership had grown beyond diplomatic relations into practical areas of cooperation.

He also reiterated Uganda’s plan to establish a permanent diplomatic mission in Seoul, saying the move would enhance bilateral ties and support defence modernisation efforts.

A key outcome of the meeting was an agreement to expand cooperation in military healthcare, with South Korea expected to support the training of UPDF personnel in medical-related fields.

Col Kim pledged to facilitate opportunities for UPDF officers to receive medical training in areas where South Korea has developed expertise, including advanced healthcare, surgical techniques, biomedical research and battlefield medicine.

He welcomed Uganda’s proposed establishment of a permanent mission in Seoul, saying it would further strengthen relations between the two countries.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in defence, technology and healthcare.
