Pepsi UFL: YMCA Holds KU, Second Leg to Determine the Fate

Kampala University were left frustrated after being held to a goalless draw by YMCA Comprehensive Institute in a tightly contested first leg of the Pepsi University Football League (UFL) semifinals at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba on Tuesday evening.

Head coach Kampala University Vicent Tumusiime cut a visibly disappointed figure at full time as his side failed to break down a resilient YMCA defense in a match defined more by tactical discipline than attacking flair.

The opening half offered little in terms of clear-cut chances, with both teams appearing cautious and fully aware of the importance of the two-legged tie. Neither side was willing to overcommit, resulting in a cagey affair where midfield battles dominated and goal-scoring opportunities were limited.

Kampala University attempted to assert control as the game progressed, seeking an advantage to carry into the return leg. However, YMCA proved why they are among the competition’s strongest contenders, maintaining their structure and frustrating the hosts throughout the encounter.

The intensity of the match was highlighted by a worrying incident involving Kampala University’s Wanume Gilbert and YMCA defender Asiku, whose collision led to a serious tongue injury for Gilbert. The incident briefly halted play as medical teams rushed him to hospital, leaving players on both sides visibly shaken.

Despite the drama, neither team managed to find the breakthrough. Chances remained scarce, and both defenses stood firm to ensure the match ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

With everything still to play for, attention now shifts to the decisive second leg in Buwambo, where YMCA will host Kampala University. The winner over the two legs will advance to the final to face either St. Lawrence University or Muteesa I Royal University in the 2025/26 UFL championship decider.

The league will turn to action on Thursday as Muteesa I Royal University hosts St Lawrence University in Masaka.
