AUUS Games 2025: Makerere Dominates the Pool, Gold Medal Already in the Cabin

Makerere University turned the swimming pool into their personal stage on Sunday, delivering a commanding all-round performance that saw them sweep the women’s, men’s and overall combined team standings as the 20th Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) Games gathered momentum.

In a show of depth, discipline and endurance, Makerere’s swimmers consistently outpaced their rivals across events, sending a clear warning to the rest of the field that the race for supremacy in the pool remains firmly under their control.

The women’s team contest provided early drama, with Makerere surging to the top on 511 points after a closely fought duel with Ndejje University, who finished second on 472. Makerere University Business School (MUBS) claimed third place with 277 points, while hosts Uganda Christian University (UCU) settled for fourth on 197. Isbat University (170) and Kampala International University (56) completed the standings.

The intensity carried into the men’s competition, where margins were even tighter. Makerere once again emerged victorious with 526 points, edging Ndejje University by a slender 13-point margin as they finished second on 513. MUBS impressed with a strong showing to place third on 444 points, followed by UCU (232) and Kampala University (102).
When both categories were combined, Makerere’s dominance became undeniable.

Their swimmers amassed a commanding 1,037 points to comfortably top the overall standings, ahead of Ndejje University on 985. MUBS (721) completed the top three, with UCU (429), Isbat University (170), Kampala University (102) and Kampala International University (56) trailing behind.

Beyond the team success, the championship also produced eye-catching individual performances. Ndejje University’s Swagiah Mubiru stole the spotlight in the women’s individual rankings, topping the chart with an outstanding 211 points. She was closely followed by Isbat University’s Brandy Nakimbugwe on 170 points and Ndejje’s Plaxidah Nakabanda with 154.

In the men’s individual standings, Ben Kaganda of MUBS emerged victorious with 134 points, narrowly edging Ndejje’s Silver Kokas Ogwang and Makerere’s Namanya Ampaire Nimusima, who were tied on 130 points apiece. Makerere swimmers, however, featured heavily throughout the top rankings, underlining the collective strength that powered their overall triumph.
