RUBIRIZI – Believers have been charged to renounce destructive habits including hatred and jealousy, and instead redirect their hearts toward God, reconciliation, and forgiveness.
The stirring call was made by Ven. Rev. Joab Akankunda on Sunday while officiating at the Thanksgiving service of the family of Kamugisha Onesmus, held at Nyakatunga Church of Uganda in Katerera, Rubirizi District.
Ven. Akankunda, the Archdeacon of Rugando Archdeaconry, warned Christians against the perils of gossip and the wasted time spent on unproductive practices such as witchcraft and malice.
He called upon the congregation to repent, pray fervently, and live holy lives as a pathway to developing their families and combating the twin scourges of poverty and domestic violence.
“Gossip, witchcraft, and malice are chains binding our families in poverty and violence. Repent, pray, and live holy lives, for a holy home is a prosperous home. Stop wasting time fighting each other and turn to God, who alone can restore our families and break every cycle of strife,” Ven. Akankunda declared.
The Archdeacon praised the Church for its vital role in complementing government efforts to foster unity, mediation, peace, and discipline within society.
He challenged believers to undergo a fundamental mindset shift, embracing hard work, love, and good morals while actively participating in government development programs to break free from the chains of poverty.
“Parents must sacrifice and struggle to take their children to school and teach them faith. This is the only way to ensure they grow into responsible and God-fearing citizens of tomorrow,” Akankunda appealed.
The Lay Leader of Nyakatunga Church of Uganda, Yona Tumuranze, confirmed that over 6.5 million Ugandan Shillings was collected in cash at the service towards the completion of the church project.
He appreciated the faithful for their steadfast support and called on them to work hard towards increasing household income and fostering family growth.
Tumuranze also appealed to parents to nurture their children in love and faith for a responsible future, and reminded Christians to remain grateful to God in both challenging times and seasons of abundance.
“Let us work hard for our families, raise our children in love and faith, and always give thanks to God, not only when we are in trouble, but also when we are rejoicing, for every moment is a gift from the Almighty,” remarked Tumuranze.
Meanwhile, Kamugisha Onesmus, the OC CID at Rukungiri CPS, said he and his family dedicated the fundraising drive toward the construction of Nyakatunga Church as a heartfelt way of thanking God for the gift of life.
Kamugisha noted that giving thanks to God is not about avoiding hardship, but rather about embracing gratitude in all circumstances and supporting community development.
“We do this not for politics or recognition, but for blessings and rewards from above,” he stated.
The officer pledged to work closely with Christians to ensure that their place of worship is not only completed but also protected and preserved through continuous renovation and care.
