The race for this year’s FEASSA Games qualification intensified on Tuesday as the USSSA Ball Games II Netball Championship reached the quarter-final stage following a thrilling round of 16 that produced dramatic finishes and closely contested encounters.
With a place at the FEASSA Games in Mlolongo, Tanzania, at stake for the quarter-final winners, several traditional powerhouses safely navigated the knockout stage, while a few fixtures went right down to the wire.
The biggest talking point of the day was St. Noa Girls Secondary School, who survived a major scare to edge Kampala Region champions Baptist High School 25-24 in one of the tournament’s most thrilling matches.
St. Noa Girls only returned to the championship after successfully winning a petition against Kyantamba Secondary School, who had eliminated them in the Round of 32 but were later found guilty of fielding underage players. Their reinstatement has now seen them advance into the last eight after another hard-fought victory.
Another unforgettable contest came between Hamdan Islamic Secondary School and Kawanda Secondary School in what many considered the match of the round. The two sides could not be separated after regulation time, ending level at 23-23 before Hamdan held their nerve in extra time to claim a dramatic 29-27 victory.
Meanwhile, former champions St. Mary’s Kitende comfortably brushed aside Merryland 28-14 to book their place in the quarter-finals, while Light College Katikamu, Katende Progressive, Greenlight Islamic, Kibuli Secondary School, and Buddo Secondary School also secured victories to remain in contention for both the national title and a coveted FEASSA Games ticket.
The quarter-finals will be played on Wednesday morning, with the winners automatically earning the honour of representing Uganda at this year’s FEASSA Games in Mlolongo, Tanzania.
