Four Way Battle for AUUS General Secretary Seat

Four-Way Battle for AUUS General Secretary Seat

By: Lawrence Mubiru

The race for the General Secretary position of the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) has taken center stage as the body heads into elections on 26th September 2025 at Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mukono.

The hotly contested seat has attracted four candidates, each bringing distinct experience and vision to the table.

At the forefront is Mr. Ssebuliba Patrick, the incumbent General Secretary and sports tutor at Victoria University. One of the most decorated sports tutors in the country, Patrick has served at two different universities and is the only member of the outgoing executive seeking re-election. His bid is seen as a test of continuity against calls for change.

Challenging him are three formidable contenders:

  • Mr. Kimbugwe Hillary (MUBS) – A strategist with both technical and leadership experience.
  • Mr. Busobozi David (Uganda Martyrs University) – The only Dean of Students in the race, promising to prioritize the welfare of student-athletes.
  • Dr. Agnes Bakula (Busitema University) – The only woman contesting, regarded as a potential game-changer with her sharp leadership credentials.

For AUUS members, this election represents more than a reshuffle of leadership; it is viewed as a turning point for an association that has been the heartbeat of university sports since 1963.

From running competitive leagues to representing Uganda at international university games, AUUS has played a central role in nurturing sports talent. The incoming executive will shape not only policies but also the future of Uganda’s student-athletes on national and global platforms.

With the spotlight firmly on the General Secretary contest, the outcome of the Mukono vote could redefine the trajectory of university sports in Uganda for years to come.
