Government Dispatches Emergency Food Relief to Drought-Hit Karamoja

By Kyeyune Ali
The Government of Uganda has launched an emergency food relief operation for communities in the Karamoja sub-region following a prolonged dry spell that has left thousands of households facing severe food shortages.
Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja on Monday flagged off trucks loaded with maize flour and beans at the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) headquarters in Bugolobi, Kampala. The supplies are being delivered to vulnerable communities across Karamoja as part of the government’s response to the worsening food crisis.
The relief operation will see the distribution of 9.4 million kilograms of maize flour and beans to more than 313,000 households in 480 parishes across the nine districts of Karamoja.
The most affected districts include Kabong, Kotido, Moroto, Napak, Nabilatuk, and Amudat, where communities have been hit hard by the prolonged dry conditions that have disrupted food production.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Prime Minister Nabbanja said the intervention was aimed at preventing loss of lives among households struggling to access food.

“Because of the prolonged dry spell in the region, households are at risk due to lack of food,” Nabbanja said.
The Office of the Prime Minister has assigned the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the business arm of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), together with the Uganda Prisons Service, Uganda Police Force, and local governments, to coordinate the delivery and distribution of the relief supplies.
The government says the initiative is part of efforts to support communities affected by climate-related challenges and restore food security in the region.
The Prime Minister, who is also Leader of Government Business in Parliament, was accompanied by Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Sam Engola, Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs Esther Anyakun, Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance Alioni Yorke Odria, NEC Managing Director Lt. Gen. James Mugira, and Members of Parliament from Karamoja.
