HARVEST IS GOOD! Uganda Sept Coffee Exports Hit Shs765bn

Uganda’s coffee sector maintained strong performance in September 2025, with exports totaling 844,949 60‑kilogram bags valued at $218.554 million (Shs766.7 billion).

According to the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) Monthly Coffee Report for September 2025, Robusta dominated the exports, with 771,704 bags worth $190.008 million (Shs666.5 billion), while Arabica contributed 73,245 bags valued at $28.547 million (Shs100.1 billion).

The rise in value comes on the back of revelations by the Bugisu Cooperative Union that the price of Robusta had jumped to Shs17,000 per kilo from Shs12,000.

The average export price for Arabica reached $6.50 per kilogram (Shs22,750), up 20 cents from the previous month, while Robusta averaged US$4.31 per kilogram (Shs15,100), slightly lower than $4.54/kg in September 2024.

Farmgate prices for September also reflected robust demand, with Kiboko Robusta fetching Shs6,500 per kilogram, Drugar Arabica at Shs13,500–13,750, and Arabica parchment at Shs14,500.

Compared with August 2025, exports showed a slight dip in quantity (August: 858,653 bags → September: 844,949 bags) but a notable increase in value ($ 203.71 million (Shs714 billion) – $ 218.55 million Shs766.7 billion), indicating higher global prices for Uganda’s coffee.

The top 10 exporting companies accounted for 69% of total exports, led by Uganda Coffee (U) Ltd, Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd, and Olam Uganda Ltd.

Major export destinations included the United States, Italy, Germany, Morocco, and Sudan, while Africa imported over 25% of Uganda’s coffee, with Kenya, Senegal, and Nigeria as key buyers. Japan also hosted the Specialty Coffee Expo from September 24–27, 2025, where Uganda showcased Arabica and fine Robusta coffees, attracting strong international interest.

Cumulative exports for the 2024/25 coffee year reached 8.2 million 60-kg bags valued at $2.3 billion (Shs8.1 trillion), up from 6.4 million bags worth $1.4 billion (Shs4.9 trillion) in the previous year.

This performance has cemented Uganda’s position as Africa’s leading coffee exporter, surpassing Ethiopia.

UCDA highlighted ongoing initiatives to support the sector, including farmer training, inspections of coffee factories and nurseries, and promotion of Good Agronomic Practices (GAPs).

In September, 4,343 farmers benefited from specialized training, while regulatory checks ensured compliance across the value chain.

Looking ahead, Uganda’s coffee exports are expected to remain strong as Central and Eastern regions continue harvesting washed and natural Arabica, as well as washed Robusta, while global demand and competitive pricing sustain market momentum.
