Jacqueline Mbabazi’s bid to carry the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag for the Member of Parliament seat representing older persons in Western Uganda has been nullified, sparking fresh uncertainty within the party.
The dramatic development comes just weeks after the NRM Election Disputes Tribunal upheld her victory in the August 26 party primaries. Earlier this month, the Tribunal dismissed Petition No. CEC 001 of 2025 filed by her closest rival, Patrick Kyamukate Mutabwire, confirming Mbabazi’s win with 215 votes against Mutabwire’s 162. Five other contenders shared the remaining 53 votes.
Thursday’s decision effectively overturns that ruling, throwing the party race for the Western Region Older Persons seat into disarray.

Mbabazi, wife to former Prime Minister John Patrick Amama Mbabazi, had already shifted gears to the general elections campaign trail, pledging to prioritize healthcare for the elderly, safeguard their property rights, and expand access to SACCO funding.
The reasons for her nullification have not yet been formally communicated by the party. However, sources within NRM point to possible fresh internal reviews that may have triggered the reversal.
The announcement has sent ripples through both the party and the wider political scene, with analysts warning it could reopen old divisions within the NRM in Western Uganda.
It remains unclear whether the party will name a new flag bearer, or if a repeat of the primaries will be ordered.
