Light College Katikamu Masuliita announced their arrival on the big stage with a historic run to the final of the Buganda Schools Competitions, capping a breakthrough campaign despite falling short in the title decider.

Guided by head coach Ivan Mpoza, the Masuliita-based side reached their first-ever final in any competition, marking a significant milestone for the school’s growing netball program.

Their journey to the final was highlighted by a commanding 21–16 victory over hosts Kawanda Secondary School in the semifinals on Sunday. The win secured a highly anticipated clash against defending champions Buddo Secondary School.

In the final, however, experience proved decisive as Buddo SS showcased their pedigree to claim a 25–16 victory, successfully defending their title and reaffirming their status as a netball powerhouse in the region.

Despite the defeat, Light College’s achievement was widely celebrated within their camp.

“It’s a great achievement. As a school, we have never reached even the semifinal of any competition, so we’re happy for this incredible performance from our girls and the technical team,” said netball manager Jordan Nsibambi.

Coach Mpoza, who joined the school in December, remains optimistic about the future.

“The team is good. My main focus is to qualify for the nationals, and I believe we shall get there,” he noted.

Meanwhile, success for the institution came at primary level, where their sister school Winsa Primary School clinched the championship title after defeating Kanjuki Junior School 28–18 in the final on their debut appearance.

The Buganda Schools Competitions, which climaxed at Kawanda Secondary School grounds, saw Buddo SS complete a remarkable double by winning both the boys’ football and netball titles at secondary level.

In girls’ football, Kawempe Muslim Secondary School edged Standard High School Zana 1–0 thanks to a lone strike from Mildred Nambalirwa.

At primary level, Bright Future Primary School triumphed in the boys’ football category, defeating St. Noa Junior School 9–8 in a tense penalty shootout following a goalless draw in regulation time.

While Buddo SS once again stamped their authority, Light College Katikamu Masuliita’s fairytale run stands out as one of the tournament’s most inspiring stories—signaling the rise of a new contender in school netball.
