MP Kabasharira Calls for Peaceful, Harmonious Elections as Christians Celebrate Christmas

By Amos Tayebwa|Ntungamo

The Rushenyi County Member of Parliament, Naome Kabasharira, has called on political opponents and voters to shun violence and embrace peaceful politics as campaigns for the 2026 general elections continue, coinciding with Christmas celebrations observed by Christians worldwide on December 25.

Speaking to this publication, Kabasharira urged all political actors to maintain discipline and harmony, citing the peaceful conduct witnessed during the recent NRM primary elections in Rushenyi County.

She noted that the primary election, in which she emerged as the NRM flag bearer, was conducted without violence, even as her main rival, Herbert Nyongozi, later opted to contest as an independent candidate.

“In the NRM primary election, we were exemplary for having peaceful elections compared to many other areas in western Uganda,” Kabasharira said. “Even now, I urge my opponents and supporters to maintain the same discipline.”

She warned against the politics of violence and abusive language, referencing incidents reported in other districts such as Rwampara and Isingiro, where clashes reportedly led to the burning of vehicles.

“Fighting and abusive language will not give us votes. We seek votes so that we can represent and serve our people, not divide them. How will you work for the people when you are fighting with them?” she asked.

As the festive season sets in, Kabasharira called upon residents of Rushenyi County to celebrate Christmas in unity and peace, emphasizing tolerance despite heightened political debates.

“We are in an election season and arguments are many, but I appeal to everyone to argue constructively. Let us celebrate Christmas in a holy and peaceful way, without violence caused by politics,” she added.

Kabasharira further revealed that she has been actively traversing the constituency canvassing for votes and pledged to prioritize key development areas, including electricity extension and road infrastructure, noting that some of these interventions are already in the pipeline.
