Two-time champions Kampala University have progressed to the quarterfinals of the Pepsi University Football League after defeating rivals Kampala International University 2-0 in their final Group A match.
The Ggaba-based side secured the crucial victory on Sunday afternoon at FUFA Stadium Kadiba, courtesy of goals from Ayebare Samuel and midfield gem Nsubuga Gideon, one in each half.
KIU started the game on the front foot, pressing aggressively in the opening 30 minutes and restricting KU from playing their usual free-flowing football. The visitors’ high pressing forced the hosts to stay compact as they searched for openings on the counter.
The breakthrough arrived in the 37th minute following a quick break led by Kiwewa Raymond. The forward was fouled just a few yards from the goal on the left flank, earning KU a dangerous free kick. Nsubuga Gideon delivered a powerful strike that was brushed by Ayebare Samuel into the back of the net, sending the home fans into wild celebration.
Like they did in the first stanza, KIU returned strongly in the second half with another high press in search of the equalizer. On several occasions, the hosts were forced onto the back foot as they protected their slender lead.
KU, however, remained dangerous on the counter. In a moment similar to the first half, Kiwewa Raymond once again broke free late in the game, beating two defenders before being brought down by a third to earn another dangerous free kick in the 90th minute.
Nsubuga Gideon stepped up and made no mistake, curling the ball into the top corner to seal the victory and register his second goal in two matches. The midfielder had earlier opened his account on debut against Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Mbarara.
The win takes Kampala University to 13 points from five matches, finishing top of Group A while remaining unbeaten.
In the other fixture of the day, Uganda Martyrs University defeated University of Kisubi 2-1 to move to 11 points, putting them in contention for one of the three best second-place qualification slots.
