The defending champions Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) proved once again why they remain the team to beat in the Pepsi University Football League after edging Kampala International University (KIU) 1-0 in a tightly contested battle at the Nkozi playground on Friday.
Skipper Tumusiime Emmanuel was the hero of the day, heading home the only goal of the match in the 56th minute from a Wijo Taban well-curled free kick that left the visiting goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
Despite the narrow margin, it was a performance full of grit and discipline from the three-time champions, who had to dig deep to subdue a spirited and rejuvenated KIU side.
The visitors dominated the early proceedings, showing more urgency and pressing high up the pitch. But their failure to capitalize on chances cost them dearly, as they couldn’t find a breakthrough before halftime.
UMU’s midfield engine room, powered by Odoi Valentino and Nicolas Jjonga, provided an effective shield to the backline, breaking up attacks and keeping the game balanced when KIU turned on the pressure.
In the second half, coach Eric Kisuze’s men used their experience and home advantage to tilt the contest. When Taban floated in a teasing free kick from the right, Tumusiime rose highest, powering in a commanding header that sent the home fans into wild celebration.
Wanji Barnabas and Yiga Steven also impressed with their relentless work rate, while goalkeeper Okoboi Saddam produced two crucial saves to preserve UMU’s lead.
KIU, led by coach Akabwai Geoffrey, put up a commendable fight characterized by teamwork and tactical discipline, but it wasn’t enough to break UMU’s 15-match unbeaten streak.
The victory lifts UMU to four points from two games, level with Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), who demolished University of Kisubi 4-0 on Thursday.
Next up, the league resumes on Monday with Mountains of the Moon University hosting Kampala University in Fort Portal — a clash expected to produce fireworks.
