Uganda Badminton Federation Expands Grassroots Reach with Shuttle Time Workshop in Rwampara

The Uganda Badminton Federation (UBF) has concluded a two-day Shuttle Time workshop aimed at promoting the sport at the grassroots level in Rwampara District. The training, held at Kinoni Girls Secondary School from October 25–26, 2025, attracted 26 sports teachers from various schools across the district.

The workshop was part of UBF’s ongoing efforts to expand badminton beyond urban centers and empower teachers with the knowledge and tools to introduce the sport to young learners. Participants were taken through both indoor and outdoor badminton techniques, safety measures, and methods of integrating the game into school programs.

UBF Chief Executive Officer Simon Mugabi emphasized the importance of such initiatives in ensuring the federation complies with the new national sports directive that requires federations to reach at least 75% of districts across the country.

“This program is vital because it helps us take badminton closer to the communities and schools. It ensures that every child, regardless of location, has a chance to play and learn the game,” Mugabi said.

The Shuttle Time program, developed by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), provides free resources, training, and equipment to teachers, enabling them to deliver safe, fun, and inclusive badminton lessons to children and youth.

Teachers who attended the training expressed gratitude, saying they had gained practical knowledge that would help them introduce badminton in their respective schools.

“We have learned a lot about the rules, techniques, and how to make the game enjoyable for learners. We are ready to start badminton in our schools,” said one of the participating teachers.

The successful completion of the Rwampara workshop marks another milestone in Badminton Uganda’s campaign to make the sport accessible in all regions of the country.
