USSSA Elite Games: Bukedea Comprehensive the New Elite Kings After Okori’s Heroics

By Kayiira Jackson

A new chapter was carved into the history books as Bukedea Comprehensive School secured their first-ever Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Elite Games boys’ football championship, overcoming Mentor Secondary School in a gripping final that went all the way to penalties.

The reigning FEASSA Games holders were tested to their limits in a high-intensity contest and had to dig deep after conceding to Gabriel Oyiru’s 32nd-minute opener, a goal that handed Mentor early control and set the tone for a fiercely contested showdown.

For much of the contest, Mentor looked poised to script their own fairytale triumph. Organized, disciplined and tactically astute, they absorbed pressure and threatened on the counter.

But champions are defined by their response to adversity — and Bukedea delivered when it mattered most.

With seconds ticking away, Deus Niwaha rose to the occasion, netting a dramatic equaliser at the death to level matters at 1–1. The goal silenced Mentor’s bench and shifted momentum irreversibly heading into the decisive shootout.

From 12 yards, Bukedea displayed nerves of steel. Their takers were flawless, converting with authority to seal a 4–2 victory and spark jubilant scenes among a mammoth crowd of local supporters.

At the heart of the triumph stood goalkeeper Andrew Okori. Just as he had done in the previous knockout round against St Mary’s Kitende, Okori emerged the hero once again, producing two vital saves in the shootout to tilt the balance firmly in Bukedea’s favour.

His composure under pressure epitomized a side forged through resilience.

Equally instrumental throughout the campaign was the prolific Amis Yabil Busingye whose three goals earned him the tournament’s golden boot. The forward had been decisive in the semi-final demolition of Fort Portal SS, where Denis Ssewagudde’s early free-kick settled nerves before Yabil’s clinical brace — highlighted by a deft looping finish — put the contest beyond doubt.

Mentor’s path to the final was commendable in its own right. They edged Uganda Martyrs High School Lubaga 1–0 in a tightly contested semi-final, showcasing a campaign built on structure, work ethic and unity.

Their spirited comebacks earlier in the tournament — notably against Bukedea in the group stages and Kyadondo SS in the quarter-finals — underscored a team rich in belief and tactical cohesion.

Individual accolades reflected Mentor’s impressive run. Samuel Ayiko was named best goalkeeper, while Gabriel Oyuru Ogwang walked away with the Most Valuable Player award.

Yet when the curtain fell on March 1, 2026, it was Bukedea Comprehensive School that stood tallest. Their breakthrough Elite Games triumph will be remembered as a victory carved from resilience, precision and unshakeable faith — the unmistakable signature of champions forged under pressure.
