Reigning East Africa champions Bukedea Comprehensive School strengthened their bid for a quarterfinal place with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kawempe Muslim SS in a tense group stage encounter honored at Nkondo grounds in Bombo on Friday.
Ssentongo Wycliffe’s first-half strike proved decisive in a match filled with intensity, discipline and flashes of brilliance from both sides. Bukedea relied on their experience to edge a youthful Kawempe side that has lost nearly half of last season’s squad.
The Eastern Region rising giants had earlier shared the spoils in an entertaining 2-2 draw against Lira’s Mentor SS. Busingye Amis calmly converted from the penalty spot before halftime, while Denis Ssewagudde added an early strike. However, an unfortunate own goal by Ryan Giggs Osinya and a second-half equalizer from Epila Emmanuel ensured the points were shared.
With four points from two matches, Bukedea now sit in a strong position and boast a 99 percent chance of progressing to the quarterfinals with one group game left.
Despite the setback, Kawempe Muslim SS remain firmly in contention. The Kampala-based side had begun their campaign brightly with a 2-0 win over hosts Janan Secondary School and now need at least a point against Mentor SS in their final group fixture to keep their knockout dreams alive.
All group stage matches will conclude on Saturday morning, with the quarterfinals scheduled for the afternoon.
The race for quarterfinal slots remains finely poised as the Elite Schools Championship group stage heads for a dramatic conclusion.
