Victoria University claimed an unbeaten victory in the first circuit of the Varsity 7s tournament held on Sunday at the University of Kisubi (UNIK) grounds.
The competition saw teams from several universities battling for supremacy, but it was Victoria University that emerged victorious, demonstrating dominance throughout the tournament.
Placed in Pool A alongside Kabale University, Uganda Christian University (UCU), Mbarara University, and Kyambogo A, Victoria managed to top their pool and secure a place in the semifinals.
Their semi-final clash against hosts UNIK proved to be an easy task, with Victoria cruising to a 55-05 win, earning a spot in the final.
In the final match, Victoria University faced Uganda Martyrs University (UMU). Victoria struck first when Malcolm Okello scored and converted his own try to give them a 7-0 lead. UMU responded with a try from Opio Arthur at the wing, narrowing the score to 7-5 at halftime.
The second half saw Victoria University continue their dominance. Hector Twinomugisha broke through UMU’s defense to score another try, which Okello converted, extending the lead to 14-05.
Aaron Tukei sealed the victory with a final try at the wing, making the full-time score 19-05 and securing the title for Victoria University.
Victoria University’s journey to the title included wins over Kabale University (33-07), UCU (17-07), Mbarara University (61-00), Kyambogo A (35-00), and UNIK (55-05).
They dedicated their win to their teammate, Daniel Kateregga, who lost his father a day before the tournament.
“I was very sure and trusted the boys from day one that the win was ours,” said Roy Cynthia, Victoria University’s team manager.
In Pool B, teams included UMU, Numba, UNIK, and Kyambogo B. Makerere University, which had confirmed its participation, failed to show up, resulting in a walkover, leaving them last on the table.
The next circuit of the Varsity 7s will be hosted by Kyambogo University, with the date yet to be announced.
