Video: Senegal Edges Burundi with Controversial Penalty

Senegal secured a narrow victory over underdogs Burundi in their AFCON Group L qualifier, thanks to a controversial penalty that left Burundi furious. The Lions of Teranga were awarded a dubious spot-kick in the 71st minute after Burundian defender was penalized for a high-boot challenge on Sadio Mane.

However, video replays appeared to show that it was not the defender’s boot but the ball that struck Mane’s head. Despite protests from Burundi, Egyptian referee Mohamed Maarouf Eid pointed to the spot, a decision that would prove decisive in the match.

Mane, who received medical attention on the pitch after the incident, initially wanted to take the penalty but was instructed to step off the field, as per the rules after medical intervention. Ismaïla Sarr confidently took responsibility and slotted home the penalty, giving Senegal the lead.

The match, played at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi, saw Senegal struggle to impose themselves, much like their previous 1-1 draw against Burkina Faso in Dakar on September 6. Despite the victory, questions linger over Senegal’s form as they continue their AFCON qualifying campaign.

Burundi, meanwhile, were left feeling hard done by, as the decision overshadowed what could have been a remarkable result for the minnows.
