The Ministry of Local Government has handed over 27 brand new motorcycles to Sub-county, Town Council, and Division Chairpersons in Wakiso District. The initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of local leaders to oversee the implementation of various government initiatives and ensure their effective delivery to the grassroots level.
Representing the Minister for Local Government, Benjamin Kumumanya, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry emphasized the importance of utilizing the motorcycles for their intended purpose. He urged the local government leaders to maximize the use of this resource to ensure efficient monitoring of government initiatives and enhance service delivery to the people of Wakiso District.
Addressing the gathering, Kumumanya reassured the chairpersons that the ministry was dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by Wakiso District. He pledged to work towards resolving issues that hinder the smooth operation of local governments in the area, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting grassroots development efforts.
However, concerns were raised during the event regarding the delayed release of funds collected by the lower local governments, which has adversely affected service delivery in many areas. Betty Ethel Naluyima, the Woman Member of Parliament, highlighted the impact of this delay and urged the ministry to prioritize resolving the issue to ensure timely and effective implementation of government projects.

Naluyima also drew attention to the encroachment of Wakiso areas by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), particularly in Bulenga and Najjera. She called upon the ministry to address the boundary dispute and protect Wakiso’s territorial integrity, emphasizing the importance of maintaining local autonomy.
Responding to the appeals, Dr. Matia Lwanga Bwanika, the District Chairperson, requested the Minister to consider Wakiso as a National District deserving of unique attention, regardless of its voting patterns. He emphasized the district’s significance and urged the ministry to prioritize its development needs to ensure equitable growth and prosperity for all residents.
Expressing gratitude on behalf of the local government, Alfred Malinga, the Chief Administrative Officer, commended the government for providing the motorcycles. He highlighted the crucial role of the chairpersons in monitoring various government programs, including the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, education, healthcare, and micro-scale irrigation. Malinga stressed that the provision of motorcycles would enhance the leaders’ ability to oversee these initiatives effectively and mobilize communities at the grassroots level, ultimately contributing to the socio-economic development of Wakiso District.
