Uganda has officially declared its readiness to host the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup, scheduled from July 20-28 at the refurbished Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
The prestigious tournament will see top African rugby teams, including Burkina Faso, Namibia, Senegal, Kenya, Algeria, Ivory Coast, and Zimbabwe, vying for continental supremacy.
Uganda Rugby Union President Godwin Kayangwe highlighted the transformative impact of the partnership with Nile Special. “Our partnership with Nile Special has been a game-changer for Ugandan rugby.”
“Together, we aim to build a vibrant rugby culture that resonates with our fans and inspires our athletes. I am thrilled to see Nile Special’s continued support every step of the way.”
CEO of Uganda Rugby Union, Isaac Lutwama, provided insights into the extensive preparations undertaken by the local organizing committee.
“We have been preparing for over the last couple of months, coordinating closely with Rugby Africa and their technical committee. We’ve set up teams to handle protocol and visa requirements, secured accommodations at Speke Resort Munyonyo, and are now focused on final technical preparations. In terms of readiness, we are at 75%.”
Representing Sports Minister Hon. Peter Ogwang, Government Chief Whip Hon. Hamson Obua reiterated the government’s support for the event. “As a government, we are massively proud to support the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup and the unbelievable efforts of the Uganda Rugby Union.”
“This tournament not only showcases the sporting talent and dedication within our motherland but also highlights the unity and passion of Ugandans. We look forward to witnessing Uganda shine on the continental stage and to the positive impact this will have on our youth and future generations.”
Adu Rando, Managing Director of Nile Breweries, expressed the company’s commitment during a Facebook Live event. “Our support for Ugandan rugby is rooted in our belief in its potential to unite and inspire. The 2024 Rugby Africa Cup campaign is another opportunity to ‘Raise Our Game.’ We aim to bring our signature festival atmosphere to this premier competition.”
Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah, joining the event virtually, praised Uganda’s dedication to hosting the tournament. “Uganda’s commitment to hosting a top-eight African rugby competition for the Rugby Africa Cup is commendable. This 11-day event in Kampala will be a festival of rugby, showcasing the wonders of Uganda.”
“The Mandela National Stadium will be ready, providing a refurbished venue for fans from across Africa to experience Ugandan hospitality,” Mensah said.
He also noted that Uganda secured the hosting rights for both 2024 and 2025, emphasizing the long-term benefits of such a commitment.
The Rugby Cranes, who last won the title in 2007, are hopeful for a strong performance on home soil. In the previous edition held in 2022, Uganda was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Kenya, who eventually lost to Namibia in the final. This year, Uganda aims to leverage home advantage for a better outcome.
