ADJUMANI — Preparations for the state funeral of General (Rtd) Moses Ali are gathering pace as government officials, family members, political leaders and security agencies finalise arrangements for the burial of one of Uganda’s longest-serving military and political leaders.
A second preparatory meeting is underway at the late general’s home in Abiricaku Village, Adjumani Town Council, where district leaders are coordinating with the national organising committee to ensure a befitting send-off.
Parliament has announced that its special sitting to honour the former Second Deputy Prime Minister has been rescheduled to Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 10am.
Following the parliamentary tribute, the body will be taken to Kololo Airstrip for an official state ceremony before being airlifted to Yumbe for Janaza prayers. It will later be transported to Adjumani, where it will spend the night ahead of the burial.
On Wednesday, representatives from all 15 districts of the West Nile sub-region are expected to gather at Paridi Stadium for a regional tribute before the final Janaza prayers at Abiricaku at 3:00pm. Burial is scheduled for 4:00pm at his ancestral home.
Adjumani Deputy Resident District Commissioner Emmanuel Okware said the district was working closely with the national organising committee to deliver a dignified state funeral.
“The Adjumani District Central Organising Committee will liaise with the government Central Organising Committee in Kampala to coordinate all burial arrangements and ensure that Gen. Moses Ali is accorded a befitting send-off worthy of his distinguished service to Uganda,” Okware said.
President Yoweri Museveni, who announced the veteran leader’s death, described Gen. Moses Ali as a dedicated patriot whose contribution to Uganda’s military, political development and agricultural transformation would be remembered for generations.
“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the death of our brother Gen. Moses Ali,” the President said after the veteran statesman died at Nakasero Hospital on Saturday at 4:00pm.
“We shall miss greatly his contribution,” Museveni added, praying that “the Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace.”
Moyo District Woman MP Bernadette Chandia Kodili, who visited the bereaved family, described Gen. Moses Ali as a nationalist, patriot and a pillar of the Ma’di sub-region.
“Gen. Moses Ali was a nationalist, a patriot and a pillar to the people of Ma’di and Uganda. His legacy of service, unity and dedication to our country will continue to inspire future generations,” she said.
Kodili urged the people of West Nile to uphold the values of unity, patriotism and service that he championed throughout his life.
Speaking on behalf of the family, the late general’s younger brother, Rashid Kawawa Abudallah, said they had lost their greatest source of guidance and unity.
“We have lost the pillar of our family. His wisdom, leadership and care held us together, and his absence leaves a great void that will be difficult to fill,” he said.
Abiricaku Village LC I Chairperson Juma Shaban Obote described the late statesman as a resilient soldier, peaceful leader and devoted family man.
“I have known Gen Moses Ali since childhood. His contribution to this community and the nation will never be forgotten,” Obote said.
Gen Moses Ali served Uganda for more than five decades in both military and civilian leadership, including as Second Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Leader of Government Business and Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County.
His death has drawn tributes from across the country, with thousands of mourners expected in Adjumani this week to pay their final respects to one of Uganda’s most enduring political and military figures.
