What is Menstrual Irregularity?
Menstrual bleeding outside the normal period is known as menstrual irregularity. In a normal menstrual cycle, there are 21-35 days between the start of one menstrual period and the start of the next period. Bleeding lasts a maximum of 8 days, there is no excessive pain or bleeding. Deviation from all these definitions is a sign of menstrual irregularity. Under normal circumstances, upon entering puberty, menstrual bleeding becomes regular within approximately 2 years following the first bleeding. This pattern continues until menopause approaches. Menstrual irregularities are very common during puberty or near menopause.
What are the symptoms of menstrual irregularity?
Frequent menstruation, infrequent menstruation, no menstruation at all, mid-menstrual bleeding, excessive or light bleeding during menstruation, long or short menstrual period.
How is menstrual irregularity treated?
If no obvious abnormality is observed in the irregularities during puberty or menopause, there is no need for much treatment. However, bleeding that occurs unexpectedly, is irregular, spot-like or lasts for a long time requires investigation and treatment. Any bleeding after menopause, regardless of its amount, is very important. In case of menstrual irregularities during the reproductive age, the possibility of pregnancy should first be considered and if this possibility is excluded, investigations should be carried out for other hormonal reasons.
What is myoma?
In addition, tumors called “myomas”, which are seen in the uterus and are known to be benign, are considered among the most common causes of bleeding irregularities, apart from hormonal effects. While myomas, popularly known as “myomas”, increase the amount of bleeding depending on their location, their location can be detected as a result of gynecological and ultrasound examination. While the abnormal thickening of the lining in the uterus also causes bleeding, excessive development of this lining, especially in advanced ages, requires observation. Bleeding that occurs after sexual intercourse primarily suggests lesions in the cervix. ‘Smear scans’ performed at regular intervals, regardless of whether there is bleeding or not, are of great importance for women’s health.
Can menstrual irregularity prevent pregnancy?
In case of complaints of irregular menstrual bleeding, the patient must be examined by a gynecologist. Factors that may cause bleeding are investigated and the vagina, ovaries and uterus are evaluated. Then, treatment is applied according to the factor causing menstrual irregularity. For example, if the cause of menstrual irregularity is large myoma or cancer in the uterus, a treatment program is determined for this.
