BUSHENYI — In a lighthearted yet symbolic exchange of banter, the Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese, Most Rev. Lambert Bainomugisha, has publicly urged the Minister of Water and Environment, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, to embrace his roots and stop disowning his former school, Kitabi Seminary.
The playful showdown unfolded as ArchBishop Lambert Bainomugisha together with Gen Kahiinda Otafiire traded playful barbs on Sunday at St. Peter’s Catholic Parish, Kitabi, in Bushenyi District, during a high-profile fundraising drive for the Archdiocese of Mbarara Development Foundation (AMDEF).
“For years, Gen. Otafiire has famously cracked jokes about his brief, turbulent stint at the prestigious Catholic institution, often using his expulsion in Senior One to distance himself from his status as an Old Boy (OB).Archbishop Bainomugisha, however, used the platform to remind the veteran politician that his name remains permanently etched in the school’s history.
“The Catholic Church has built so many institutions of learning, and our Chief Guest, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, attended one of them, which was a seminary,” the Archbishop said. “But he usually disowns his old school. He forgets that he is an old boy of Kitabi Seminary, even though he was expelled.”
Dr. Silver Mugisha, the Managing Director of National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), injected more humor into the conversation, attributing Otafiire’s teenage expulsion to his famously unfiltered wit.
“Our Guest of Honour usually jokes a lot, and you may think he is not serious in whatever he says. I think that’s why he was expelled from the seminary,” Dr. Mugisha teased.
Gen. Otafiire, registered officially in the school archives as Alumnus No. 0879/66 (Class of 1966), did not shy away from the spotlight. Proving there was no lingering bad blood, the Minister enthusiastically led the congregation in singing a happy birthday song for Archbishop Bainomugisha.
While later chatting with an old classmate from Bubangizi Primary School, Otafiire fired back a witty retort directed at the prelate.
“However much they expelled me from the seminary, they didn’t expel me from primary school,” Otafiire joked, drawing laughter from the crowd.
The friendly back-and-forth between Otafiire and the Catholic community is part of a long-running joke.
Following his appointment to the Water and Environment docket, the Kitabi Seminary Old Boys Association (KISOBA) formally congratulated him, writing, “The KISOBA brethren rejoice with you and assure you of their prayers as you continue with the noble call to serve God and country with wisdom, integrity, and faithful stewardship.”
True to his character, Otafiire responded to the association via social media with his trademark sarcasm: “Thank you for congratulating me, albeit after expelling me in Senior One. Hahaa.”
Despite his short-lived seminary days, the event highlighted the strong, enduring bond and mutual respect between the colorful general, his former schoolmates, and the leadership of the Catholic Church.
