Police in Mukono have arrested 29 people for carrying out mob justice by burning four people to death after being suspected of being boda boda robbers.

The four suspected robbers, were killed and their bodies burnt beyond recognition after being accused of killing Richard Mawanda, 56 and Sande Ssemanda, 35, whose bodies were discovered in a sand mining pond while their motorcycles had been taken.

The incident happened at  Kakoola Village, Nama Subcounty, Mukono district.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire explained that following the robbery and killing of the two boda boda riders, John Ssenyondo who is currently in custody at Mukono Central Police Station identified the alleged attackers on the fateful night before he alerted community members.

“They located the suspects identified above, beat them up, and burnt them beyond recognition. They later suspected others to be involved in the murders of the riders, whom they arrested, brought to the burial grounds of one of the deceased riders, and executed them before setting their bodies ablaze,” Owoyesigyire said.

He said that after the incident of mob justice where the four people were killed, police in Mukono together with other security agencies arrested 29 individuals who participated in the lynching and killing of the suspected robbers to aid in ongoing investigations.”

Concurrently, an intensive probe is underway to uncover any additional suspects involved in the initial murder of the two riders and the two separate cases of mob justice and malicious damage,” Owoyesigyire said.

He urged  the public to refrain from resorting to mob justice, as it not only fails to deliver justice but also obstructs law enforcement efforts by impeding evidence collection.
