Kampala- The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has nominated Sheikhati Nakabugo Zainabu as the second Deputy Director of Sharia, specifically overseeing female affairs, in a move seen as strengthening women’s representation in Islamic leadership.
The decision was reached during the National Management Committee’s weekly Tuesday meeting chaired by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje. The nomination now awaits formal approval by the relevant UMSC organs during their forthcoming mandatory sittings, in accordance with the UMSC Constitution.
Sheikhati Nakabugo brings a strong academic and professional background in Islamic jurisprudence. She is a beneficiary of scholarship opportunities secured by UMSC from Libya during the era of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. She holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Sharia from the Islamic Call University College, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the Islamic University in Uganda. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Sharia at IUIU.
Prior to her nomination, Sheikhati Nakabugo served as the head of the Islamic and Sharia Department at the UMSC-based Islamic Call University in Old Kampala. She has already begun executing her duties in the new role, pending official confirmation.
Her nomination marks a significant step in promoting female leadership within Islamic institutions in Uganda, particularly in areas concerning women’s religious affairs.
