Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (WSACCO) demonstrated its commitment to women’s health and well being by donating essential items to female residents of Katakwi district in celebration of International Women’s Day. The donation, valued at ten million shillings, comprised 518 packs of reusable sanitary pads and 139 standard maama kits.
Major (Rtd) Godfrey Katamba, the Katakwi Resident District Commissioner, commended WSACCO for not only serving its members but also extending support to the broader community where the SACCO operates. This gesture reflects a holistic approach to community engagement and welfare.
Colonel Betty Musuya, Director of Women Affairs of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), expressed gratitude to Wazalendo for promptly responding to the call for assistance in supporting girls and women during the Women’s Day celebrations. She recognized the significance of the donation in promoting girls’ hygiene, facilitating education, and assisting mothers who lack access to birth kits.
Major Ongodia, representing the Eastern Region on the WSACCO Board of Directors, emphasized that the donation aligns with cooperative principles, particularly principle number seven. He clarified that the specific focus on vulnerable girls and women in Katakwi underscores WSACCO’s commitment to community development and support.

Maj Mariam Kagoro, the Gender representative on the Board of Directors, highlighted the inclusive nature of Wazalendo SACCO’s initiatives, emphasizing that the SACCO serves not only soldiers but also the broader community. She underscored the importance of supporting women, who encompass various roles within society.
Dr. Simon Omeke, the District Health Officer, expressed appreciation to Wazalendo for addressing a critical issue faced by girls in the district: menstrual hygiene management. He noted that inadequate menstrual hygiene management contributes to school dropouts and early marriages among girls. Additionally, Dr. Omeke emphasized the significance of mama kits in ensuring that expectant mothers have essential birthing supplies and a preparedness plan.
